It was the masked man and the tough Olympic Bronze Medalist who owned the night at legendary Hayward Field on the opening night of the USA Track & Field Championships on the University of Oregon campus in Eugene Oregon. Rupp wore his new-found mask that helps his breathing in the early stages of his races. Once the second half of the 10K hit its mark, off came the mask and the serious racing began.
Shalane Flanagan was in total control of the Womens' 10K Final. She had an early 20m lead with veteran Olympians Kara Goucher and Jen Rhines in tow. The three women gained the team spots for the World Championships that take place in August in South Korea.
Galen Rupp did what he does best at Hayward Field: impress the home state audience with a strong finish and win. His last 800m was blistering as he took off with 2 laps remaining in 58 - 54 for a 1:52 final 800. No one in the field could match that surge.
The Championship continues through Sunday afternoon. Look for more photos and coverage from Eugene.
