Summer is that time of being drawn to the neighborhood pool, nap time in a hammock or maybe just maybe some distance running in the woods.  For most high school cross country runners, the summer is all about building a base of miles and running with others in a pack.  Those runs often are on wooded trails with plenty of shade and cooling breezes.

What are the keys to summer cross country training

  • Running with a group at one pace
  • Slowly building up weekly mileage
  • Trail  running in parks and woods
  • No speed work
  • Hills can be your friend
  • Stay on soft surfaces

Enjoy the summer weeks of base training and certainly avoid track work and running on hard surfaces as much as possible.  It is a long season of distance running.  This is the time to learn or remind yourself why cross country distance running is pure fun.
