As proof that the Good Lord has a tremendous sense
of humor, for the past twelve years, I have
celebrated my birthday at an aging event.
I am actually learning a lot at the annual American
Society on Aging/National Council on Aging
conference, and I am extremely encouraged by the
many sessions dedicated to the needs of family
caregivers. It is also a great opportunity to
catch up with professionals and advocates who come
from across the nation to talk about issues of
importance to us as we care for our loved ones.
We are excited that this event is the first place we
distributed the new issue of Today’s Caregiver
magazine, which includes a cover interview with Gail
Sheehy about her new book, Passages in
Caregiving: Turning Chaos into Confidence.
It was a real pleasure to get an update from our
January cover interviewee, U.S. Assistant Secretary
on Aging Kathy Greenlee.
In my message a few days ago, I spoke of my pain at
never again being able to talk with my friends’
daughter, Sara Kaufman, on our shared birthday since
she passed away last September. I actually did
receive a birthday call from a Ms. Kaufman; not
Sara, but her younger sister Daryl. Between tears,
Daryl said she read my email and will continue
Sara’s tradition of calling me on the birthday that
I shared with her sister. Besides my dog Morris, who
was a gift four years ago, I don’t think I have ever
received a better birthday gift.
