As I travel the country talking with caregivers
about the support and services in their neck of
the woods, one thing has become crystal clear.
The support a community has to offer its
caregivers certainly has something to do with
funding and geography, but most of all it has to
do with people like you.
In every community that is making strides for
their family caregivers, you can point to the
folks who start things, motivate people and
create value for his or her fellow caregiver. I was thinking of one such person the
other day, when in my travels I heard from
caregivers in a rather well-populated northern
community about how hard it is to get caregivers
together. Their support groups never seem to gain
traction and fail as soon as they start. This brought me to thinking about Corky
Hochler, a dedicated caregiver to her husband
Harry and a community spirit who never seemed to
run out of energy for the support group she was
instrumental in founding in South Florida. And what a support group it is, large and
enthusiastic, boisterous and sharing.
Corky passed away this past Friday and will be missed by all in her
group and community. But if I know Corky, she will be joining
the support group, at least in spirit, each and
every month.
Become or support the Corky in your town. You and your community
will be better off by doing so.
