Cleveland Rocks
Cleveland does indeed rock. Or more
precisely, the caregivers of Cleveland
rock. We just held our first Fearless
Caregiver Forum in the city and what a
day it was. We were keeping our fingers
crossed about the weather since all
forecasts called for monsoons, but the
fates were on our side and not a drop of
rain fell during the entire day. Along
with the hundreds of Clevelanders we
were joined by a lively group of
caregivers from Toledo, which is over
three hours away.
We started the day with an expert Q and
A session, but as usual the experts were
sitting in the audience as well as on
the stage. It is one thing for an expert
to pontificate on the need for caring
for yourself but it is a greater thing
by far for a caregiver to stand up and
say “Things got a lot better when I just
decided that I was going to chill-out
and start taking things lighter” Or the
gentleman who said “when my wife took
ill, the only thing that saved me was
the support group I started going to.”
For every question that arose from the
audience, there was another caregiver
with a viable solution sitting just
tables away from the questioner.
Special thanks to Heather Hill Hospital
and Health Partnership for sponsoring a
terrific lunch, during the 2 p.m.
session with Debbie Reynolds one
caregiver stood up and said that she
hoped Debbie had the lunch because it
was so good. Thanks to Western Reserve
Area Agency on Aging and Heather Hill
for helping to sponsor caregiver’s
attendance and to CommuniCare for the
luxurious dessert. Thanks also to all of
the sponsors and exhibitors for not only
making that day possible but for the
support and advice I saw them give
caregivers during the day. And I have to
add a special thanks to Pfizer and the
Standing Ovations program.
And thanks to Debbie Reynolds for being
such a spectacular guest, I was of
course blown away by her ability to
captivate an audience, but even more
enchanted by how she interacted as a
caregiver with the audience of
caregivers on such a personal and honest
level.
On to Phoenix!
