I am a disabled grandmother who is raising a special
needs grandchild and would like to network with others who
have similar needs and experiences. What should I do?

Jill, you should contact the agency on aging in your area - they may well have a support group for grandparents raising grandchildren. If you specifically want to talk with others who are helping special needs grandchildren, contact schools in your area if they are accommodating children with the same needs as your grandchild, they should be able to put you in touch with any local support groups; also inquire at the medical facility where your grandchild receives healthcare. You could try the Internet; googling is easy--typein www.google.com--you may be lucky enough to find information just by typing in (when prompted) something like "helping a child with " and fill in the blank with some words describing your grandchild's special needs. Good luck!

Check with your Area Office on Aging. They may have a grandparent program that can support you. Also, check with the County Board of Developmental Disabilities.

Go to www.caring.com. It is the best website on the Internet for all kinds of discussion, on all kinds of illnesses and ages. You will find a discussion group there that you can join.

Hi Jill,I am also a grandmother raising a grandchild with special needs. Many churches and social service organizations have support groups for us. Here in MN there is Lutheran Social Services. Check with your grandchilds school social worker too. Good Luck!
