My mother, who is 83 years of age, suffers from dementia.
She loves to chew on her gums when her teeth are not in her
mouth. How can I redirect her from doing that? Or do I just
live with it?

Have you tried only removing the teeth for the 3 minutes it takes Polident to work? (plus a minute or two for you to brush them, while encouraging her to brush her gums, tongue) Let her sleep with them in her mouth. Check with her dentist to see if it's ok to sleep with her dentures in.

She may be obsessed with not having her teeth in; maybe she is forgetting that they aren't in and is trying to push them into place, without having the dentures in. Perhaps the distraction of a hard candy would sooth her mouth and habit.
