Carenotes

Welcome to CareNotes. In this special section we will feature a reader's letter and provide an opportunity for an interactive exchange that will help find some answers and possible solutions to concerns. This Week's Carenote - 12/28/10
One of my questions is how much do I push and how much do I take over.  I never know if it's too much or not enough.

I am so looking forward to the conference.

Sincerely,

ER

I THINK WE HAVE TO QUIET OUR FEARS AND BE INTUITIVE AS THE NATURE OF THE DISEASE IS EVERCHANGING. I TAKE CARE OF MY 2 PARENTS - AND THE PERSONALITIES, LOCATION, TIMING AND OTHER FACTORS HAVE TO BE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT . . . THERE IS NO ONE WAY THAT IS BEST. JUST KNOW YOU ARE DOING THE BEST YOU CAN AND BREATHE!!!

Hello, I face the same issue many times. The best answer I can give is to pray about it. After that, I just listen. I listen to my heart and to the family members and just make the best decision that I think is right. I have found that most families prefer you to "jump in" and make executive decisions. If you are dealing with a family who is not this way, you will find out quicky and I simply apolagize and ask them how I can best help them. Sometimes it is to just stay out of the way. But more often than not, families want me to jump in and sort of take over, as they are already overwhelmed with dealing with their loved one. Hope this helps!

My wife volunteers at the lovely Hospice Home. She is a good listener. I am not. That is why she volunteers and I write eulogies.

When it comes to pushing, I don't find that this is very useful. Keeping your eyes open and offering solutions to some problems that your loved ones may be having is a better way. Sometimes having a neutral party come in to talk to everyone is also a useful tool.
