This Week's Carenote - 7/21/10
Hello,
I live in CA and I have been a caregiver to
both of my parents since 1983. My father
passed in 1988, and recently my mom
has been showing signs of Alzheimer's and or
dementia. She also has heart disease, 3
types of arthritis (including fibromyalgia)
and diabetes. I work full time, and take care of her. I am seeing lately
that she needs my assistance more.
I was thinking about looking into taking
some time off work, but would love to find
something I can work from home where I can
earn a decent income and still be here to
watch after her. Do you have any
suggestions?

CommentsKudos on the hard work your have done for your family in being a caregiver for all those years. Here are a couple of careers that you can do from home. If you have a computer at home, I know there are jobs for doing medical transcription, and also medical coding from home. You may look into these types of professions. There are some junior colleges that offer certificates in these professions. I hope this helps. Take care.

CommentsTo give you Peace of Mind why don't you hire someone to come in and be with your Mom for a couple hours daily while you are at work...?
You don't say how old your mother is,, Her SS should be able to help with $$. Or how about contacting yours or your Mother's church and see if some Volunteers from the Ladies Mission Group could come in for a couple hours each day, especially around Lunch time.( They would have lunch with Mom).Your Mother might enjoy the company and it would provide Social time for her and the ladies could chat, play cards or other games, watch a movie together, go out and sit on Patio or Porch, listen to Music. Contact local college and maybe one or two of the students could come in and be in the house with Mom. They could do their studying if Mom was napping but still be there in case she needed assistance to bathroom....? Local Nursing Home- maybe some of the Aides would like to earn 4 hours of pay a day. There are all sorts of solutions while you investigate a job that would allow you to work from Home.--
Private Agencies can be hired.

CommentsA loved one may qualify for gov't assistance (i.e. Medicaid - Waiver, etc.). Gov't may not pay the family member directly to take care of their loved one; but may pay a qualified Provider (i.e. Home Helpers). The Provider can then hire the family member. The Gov't pays the Provider & then the Provider pays the family member to take care of their loved ones. 1/3 of my staff is set up this way.
