Hello,
I'm searching for literature/poetry/spiritual
meditations to read to my terminally ill mom. Do you have any
recommendations?
Thanks, J

I don't know what spiritual practices you and your mom are comfortable with. When my sister was dying, I read the Psalms to her. Some are joyous and celebratory and some are laments. You have to ask-- or guess-- which matches your mom's mind-set, but they are so grounding. Psalms 23, 121 and 139 in particular help banish that fear of what comes next-- plenty of peace of mind and comfort to be found there.
Blessings, Joanne

Check the following websites: dailydevotions.com, beliefnet.com...They have several links to other websites that are inspirational. the website walkthetalk.com not only have great insiteful sayings, but some video or audio stuff that you can listen to. There are books by Maryann Williamson that offer spiritual guidance and also a book called A Course in Miracles. Good Luck and God Bless!

My father, who just recently died (March 3rd) particularly loved it when I would read to him from the Guidepost magazine. I went to my library to get old issues when I had read all of the ones I had currently in my home. they were uplifting stories and of a spiritual nature without touting one religion specifically. Hope that helps.

My mom lived with me until she was 101 and spent much of her time very bored. As a former teacher, she valued brain power. I found that reading heavy material to her was overwhelming but short, age-appropriate trivia challenges were fun and gave her many ego-boosting "I know that" moments. As a result, I have had published seven trivia books designed to tap into the long term memories of the elderly. Use trivia that exercises memory skills instead of trying to stump the participant. Try it, it can add a little fun to a heavy situation.

Appropriate items to read would be any story from any of the Chicken Soup
books which can
be found at your local library or church library.Other Daily
Devotional readings...
Any poetry, including children's poems, Reader's
Digest, Reminisce Magazine, Good Old Days,
any articles from women's
magazines, Country Woman Magazine, Birds and Blooms, Reading a Chapter a day
from any book about something she was / still interested in . Books about
cooking, needle work, crocheting, painting , Gardening etc... Doesn't have
to be strictly meditations.... And if the person can still see, then show
them the pictures....
I am a Hospice Volunteer and take a tote bag of a
variety of books, magazines and music tapes with me when I visit my patients. I
have music tapes of children singing, birds singing, dulcimer music, folk
music, Hymns. and other instrumental and Country, Classical music.. etc. I read
parts of the newspaper to them, I read the comic section and Dear Abby...
When they sense that you are interested in what you are reading to them, and
read with expression they will take interest too.
Hey I even made them laugh
by reading the jokes from Reader's Digest... Old Classic Books such as Tom
Sawyer, Black Beauty, Nancy Drew Mysteries...If this was a Man I would
read about Farming, tools, fishing and hunting , woodworking, carving, mountain
climbing....
Anything You Read -Because they know you Want to and
Love spending this time with them... Readings could last as short as 5 to 10 min
or when reading Chapters out of books could last 20 min to 30 min. They will
begin to look forward to this special time...
