I'm delighted that you recognize the importance of keeping people with Alzheimer's active and engaged. You can subscribe to sites like Activity Director.com for a reasonable fee and get loads of activities. Also, an internet search of "activities for seniors with dementia" will return some free sites. Consider all the areas - physical movement, arts, expression, music, sensory and tactile. I use simple card games like just dealing out the cards and then saying who has a 1, put it down, now who has a 2. With my mom and her residents, we sit in a circle and kick a beach ball back and forth, they will do it for hours. Simple cooking recipes, such as you would use for kids are good. Chair exercises such as Sit and be Fit are great. Also, some children's activities are appropriate, such as stringing cherrios and hanging them outside for the birds, stamping paint with stamps made from raw potatoes, finger painting (with pudding if you think they might eat it, add food coloring to vanilla to make more colors.

You may want to try reminisence work. Also simple things like bringing in potting soil, seeds, and planting in styrofoam cups. Another idea is a round robin where each person says a sentence on a topic, creating a poem, and then in the end create a literature magazine.

Visiting pets, especially those that do tricks a ball can be very entertaining. Even people with advanced Alzheimer's can throw or roll a ball for a dog to chase. It seems like even the most impaired patients respond to animals.
