I have an Aunt who is having trouble with
bladder control and isn’t being very cooperative about going to
see a doctor. She is only 52 years old and makes excuses that
this is only a temporary problem and it will soon go away. I
know that there are doctors who can help her. What type of
doctor should I find and refer her to?

Make her an appointment with a Urologist and he can probably put her on medication that will help. I have been a caregiver to 4 different family members and believe me they have medication for almost everything these days. Good luck in getting her to go. That will be the hard part....

Hi, Dear Caregiver -
My mom had the same problem 3 years ago. She needed to go to bathroom every 5 to 10 minutes for about a year. We tried many different medicines but would not work. One day we met one of my friends at the grocery store. Her mom had the same problem but was cured after drinking an 8 ounce of cranberry juice per day.
It worked on my mom too. I have been giving my mom a very small glass of cranberry juice everyday since I met my friend. Now my mom can sleep straight for 7 hours without a need to pee.
What a relief.
Why don't you give it a try. Good luck.

Hi;
Been there with my mother. She had to have surgery because of a dropped bladder. We went to a urologist. It worked 100%. Ginny

Please tell you aunt life is way too short to suffer with bladder control! I too had problems for the last 8 years, had one surgery which did not work, then needed to care for my Mother and Handicapped brother who lived together. Well after Mom's death, my brother came to live with me and I went to a wonderful Urologist. He explained everything to me ad set up the surgery.
After the 4-6 week recovery, I feel GREAT! No more worries about getting to the bathroom in time, can sleep through the night, can attend community events without searching for a bathroom first, in short - I have my life back and so can your aunt! Please encourage her and go with her to the doctor.

I would recommend her primary care doctor or a urologist. Usually you need a referral, depending on the kind of insurance. But there are medications that her doctor can prescribe, and she could do the kegel exercise. This really helps.

Her primary doctor can prescribe something for her like Detrol LA, or he/she will refer her to a urologist if there seems to be anything more serious than a bladder/urinary infection. You probably can call her primary doctor and have him do the prescription over the phone with the pharmacy.
Good luck.

First try to address her anxiety, reluctance to see a physician. Start with making an appointment with her primary MD/general practitioner to rule out other problems that might be contributing to the bladder issues. Eventually if other problems are not a cause, she will probably be referred to a Urologist for further testing and recommendations.

Although I cannot speak with ultimate authority I
believe you should start with her primary care physician. They should be able to
point you in the right direction. She should see the appropriate type of
urologist who has experience with her primary condition causing the bladder
issues. This is so important. You do not want to wait and not treat bladder
issues because then the kidneys can be affected. That is not a road you want to
traverse! Best of health and luck to you and your mom. Regards, Jen Sherman
