An Interview with Phylicia Rashad
Phylicia Rashad, actor, producer,
writer, is possibly most recognized for
her stellar role as Clair Olivia Hanks
Huxtable, the wife/partner of Heathcliff
“Cliff” Huxtable (Bill Cosby) on The
Cosby Show.
Ms. Rashad has recently taken on a new
role in raising awareness of Peripheral
Artery Disease (PAD), a condition that
affects about eight million Americans
and puts them at more than double the
risk of heart attack or stroke.
Editor-in-Chief Gary Barg recently sat
down with Ms. Rashad for a frank, funny
and wide-ranging interview. Who
could expect less from Mrs. Huxtable?
Gary Barg:
What should people know about PAD?
Phylicia Rashad:
That the people who are at
greatest risk for developing PAD are
those with diabetes who are over 50
years old, who have hypertension,
high cholesterol, people who are
heavy smokers, people over 70;
people with a history of heart
attack or a stroke in their family.

has PAD affected your family? ...continued

How To Be A Parkinson's Caregiver
|
|
By Jennifer Bradley,
Staff Writer
As any caregiver knows, Parkinson’s disease is
both chronic and progressive. It persists over a
long period of time and the symptoms worsen.
Often the disease has been present for many
years before active care even is necessary.
This fact alone can bring many challenges along
the way. A loved one secretly may have adapted
their life to this condition, hiding any
symptoms...continued

Nutrition Ideas for Stress Reduction
By Cheryl Ellis, Staff Writer
Stress depletes the body of energy in a variety
of ways. Loss of sleep, feelings of agitation or
depression, and development of poor eating habits are
“side effects” of stress that need intervention. Some stress can help us rise to the occasion and
get things done, but too much stress drains the body. One way to break the stress cycle is by changing
the diet to one that can actually help reduce stress...continued

I cared for my father until he recently passed away. I
was the POA for all his decisions. My sister and I are
the executors of his will. My sister is accusing me of
taking my father’s money. She claims $35,000 is
missing. My father lived within our home with my
family. My sister did nothing, and I mean nothing.
I made sure he had everything he wanted. I feel I
saved us money; in a nursing home, all the money would be
gone by now. I feel so hurt from her allegations
after spending five years of my life taking care of him.
I would do it again in a minute. I loved my father.
I put my life on hold to care of him and my mom. Mom
passed first, then he slowly got worse after her death.
I am gathering all our utility bills, house payments, home
owners' insurance, and what we paid for his sitters'
time. What about all the time we put in taking care of him?
Any advice at this point would be appreciated.
