Today, as I celebrate my birthday, I also grieve the phone call I will
not receive.
“Beware the Ides of March,” as the saying goes. Although it may be true
in my case, nothing could have been further from the truth for Sara
Kaufman, also born on this date. I met Sara and her family shortly after
graduating college. My brother and I were sharing a townhouse in North
Miami and the Kaufmans were our neighbors. From the first day, they
opened their hearts to us. Sara was only eight years old when we moved
into the neighborhood. Sara was always filled with ideas, concepts and thoughts which
spilled out of her so fast, you soon realized she was thinking faster than
anyone could possibly talk. Sara became involved in whatever caught

Signs of Hearing Loss
Many loved ones will not tell their caregiver of an
onset of hearing loss, for fear of losing independence.
Instead, they become isolated, depressed, angry, lonely,

I hadn’t seen Vera for years. Now I see her just about
every time Carolyn and I drive back to see Carolyn’s mother,
Beth. Beth lives in the Alzheimer’s unit of the
Methwick Retirement Community in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Recently, Vera moved there, too, and into the same wing of

Wow! I can’t believe there are people out there who are
going through the same things I am. I am a caregiver by
profession and also trying to help my 73-year-old working
mother care for her 80-year-old husband (my step-father),
who has heart failure and lung disease. She is incredible.
But I worry so much about her. His family does nothing for
him, not even visit. Her whole life now is caring for him,
and working. I want her to enjoy her senior years. I know it
sounds selfish, but I love her so much and I want her to be
happy. She acts like she is, but I see through that. I try
my best to help her with him, but circumstances from long
ago get in the way of my truly caring for him. My sisters
have made a decision not to visit my mother’s home, or bring
their children to her home, because of his past. He has
destroyed our family. So it’s she and I.
I went through a
severe episode of depression that I am trying to work
through. I plan to return to work in a week, but I'm afraid
she will need me more than I can be there for her. I am open
for any ideas or suggestions, and feel almost desperate at
this point. I am so glad I found this newsletter and all of
you. Maybe we can find some way to make it better. I have so
much love in my heart and that’s what helps me get out of
bed each morning; and knowing God will be there for me.
