Summer of Respite 2011

Now that the summer is in full swing, it is time to consider how to give a break to the most important person in your loved one’s life – you. Turn to the caregiver sitting next to you in the doctor’s waiting room and ask what they are doing to take some time for themselves. 

Email me your own respite tips to share within this column.  If everyone sends their favorite tips, I’m sure there will be plenty of interesting ideas for all of us to add to our own lists. For those who think that respite is an impossible dream, I’m going to jump-start this list with great ideas from family caregivers...continued

Finding Support for Hereditary Neuropathy
By Trish Hughes Kreis Hereditary neuropathy is a group of disorders affecting the peripheral nervous system (sensory and/or motor functions) and is passed down through families.  There are hereditary neuropathic disorders affecting only the sensory functions or only the motor functions but there are also hereditary neuropathic disorders affecting both sensory and motor functions.  The most common hereditary neuropathy, which affects both sensory and motor functions, is Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT), named after the three doctors who discovered it. ...continued

Sharing Wisdom - Caregiver Tips
From  Beth in Pennsylvania Given to me by a friend:  Use reflective tape at night to direct an elderly person to and from the bathroom. Apply tape to the floor and have them practice following the reflective tape so they won’t get lost. From Sara in Louisiana My husband is patient of a neurologist. Today he had an appointment and didn't see the need for me to be there. It was a good idea for me to talk to the doctor as my husband forgot about what happened on Easter. The doctor was glad he heard about this from me. He said I am welcome any time and you can be sure I'll be at every appointment from now on. My husband has a brain injury and has short-term memory loss. He doesn't tell me much about his spells and I have to hear him tell others on the phone or when someone comes to our home. My first 911 call was not too long ago. My tip is, if you are new to caregiving, go to the doctor’s office even if your loved one doesn't want you to be there, so you can tell the doctor what you know. The doctor will welcome any and all information you can provide about your loved one's illness.
