An
Interview with Lonnie Ali
Lonnie Ali is the wife
of heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ali, a Parkinson’s disease
caregiver and a tireless national caregiving advocate. Gary Barg, Editor in
Chief, recently sat down for a wide-ranging interview with this
champion for family caregivers.
Gary Barg: It’s impossible to talk
about Mohammad Ali and not talk about positive thinking. What role
do you think attitude plays in the well-being of a caregiver of
someone living with Parkinson’s disease?
Lonnie Ali:
It’s important for all caregivers to keep a very positive attitude
and to realize that this is a disease that can be managed. It’s not
something you have to be afraid of; the more you know, the more
empowered you become. If you have a positive attitude, you can put
things into perspective and actually become a better caregiver.
Keeping a positive outlook on things, and trying to convey that to
the Parkinson’s patient as well, is extremely important in the
management of this illness.

Young Cancer Spouses |
By Sandra Ray, Staff Writer
Young and cancer are two words we don’t often piece together, unless
we’re watching fundraisers for hospitals for children with cancer.
Yet, there are more and more people becoming afflicted with various
types of cancer who are recently married, or have started the road
to raising a family...continued

Caregiving In Times Of Uncertainty |
|
By Eric Gnezda
There’s a woman in New England who directs a staff of
caregivers. She’s very committed to her work, but as she
tells it, it got to the point where she dreaded going to
social functions because of the inevitable question,
“What do you do for a living?” Every time she answered,
it seemed, someone would respond with something like,
“Gee, that must be depressing…”

Sharing Wisdom - Caregiver Tips |
|
From Pat in PA I had our home remodeled by
adding an accessible bathroom, widening doors and adding wood floors. I
consulted a Universal Design Consultant and did a lot of research on my
own. The lesson I learned is there is no perfect plan. The shower is
awesome; but while wooden floors in the main part of the home are easy
to roll over, they create other issues. They scratch with various
equipment in use. Chair transfers are more difficult due to things
slipping. The dining room table moves as the wheelchair gets pushed in.
I have tried so many products and it is still a problem. Each situation
is unique. One thing I came up with on my own was pocket doors to
bedroom and bathroom. I love them. The floors are my biggest area of
distress. The manufacturer says, “We don't guarantee against scratches.”
I'm not sure what the 25-year guarantee is for, but it’s not scratches!
In antiques, scratches add beauty...not when the floor is only one year
old. But in the scheme of life, it is minor (or so I keep telling
myself, ha ha). I believe having the plans reviewed by a Universal
Design Consultant is worth the fee. Good luck to all attempting a
project of this magnitude while being a caregiver. Can you spell ADAPT?
I hope so. Obviously, a sense of humor is important. God bless us one
and all!
From Anita in NJ I just added a stair lift to
extend my parents’ stay in their home. I was quite nervous about this
because their home has narrow stairs and I wasn't sure any equipment
would fit. But a store in Milburn had some friendly folks who put up
with me for three visits. They talked me through the process. In
the end, it was so easy and I'm sure it will extend my parents’ time in
their home much longer than they would have been able to stay otherwise.
They love that house.
