Financing Hope with Modest Needs |
By: Kristine Dwyer, LSW
Geneva and her husband struggle
each month to make ends meet since
she had to leave her job last year
to care full-time for her daughter.
Her daughter suffers from Down’s
syndrome, ALL leukemia, and severe
anemia. As the cold winter months in
Ohio approached, they worried how
they would heat their home. The
fuel companies required a minimum
delivery of 250 gallons to fill the
tank in order to deliver fuel and
after basic necessities of mortgage,
food, and medical supplies for
Geneva’s daughter, there wasn’t
enough money left. They tried to
borrow funds from relatives to help,
yet no one was able to assist them.
In desperation, Geneva contacted

Long Distance Caregiver - Challenges and Solutions
|
By Helen Hunter, ACSW, CMSW

Families who struggle to care for
a parent across the miles have a
unique disadvantage. They cannot be
there to know what is really
happening. It is often difficult and
frustrating to reach doctors or
social service agencies and to be
able to coordinate the needed care.
The older parent may forget what the
doctor has told them, or choose not
to “burden” their child with
problematic information. Indeed,
many adult children are not aware
that there is a problem until a
visit is made, and they see the
changes in the parent’s physical,
mental or emotional functioning...

I am the caregiver of my 86 year old mother who lives with me. I get some part time help from the V.A. and Elder Services in my area to help with bathing her, changing bed sheets and
cleaning her bathroom. Mom has bad knees, diabetes,
is severely overweight, incontinent and refuses to wear her
Depends. I am grateful to have help with her because I could not keep up with her needs on my own
and her aides are very nice.
We have had bad aides from
time to time after her
surgeries so I appreciate
the difference.
I feel better having
people that care in my home. The only issue I have is
that one of the aides has
taken it upon herself to food shop out
of our house. She is rarely
there when I am home so I
haven't been able to
confront her about it. My mom adores her and won't
confront her about it and I dont want to report her.
My mom gets Meals on Wheels
and still presents me with a
$200 food shopping list
every week which is an
insane amount of food for
one semi ambulatory person
to consume.
