The Caregivers' Motto

Five years ago, Hurricane Katrina made landfall in the United States, first in South Florida and then in the Gulf Coast. Here in Fort Lauderdale, we felt that we were hit pretty bad (losing power for over a week and even lives) until we saw how the hurricane and levee break affected our neighbors to the north.  Like preparing for family caregiving, preparing for hurricane season does not always follow a specified route. Growing up in South Florida, my dad always prepared for hurricanes whenever they seemed to be coming our way. In those days, tracking the paths of hurricanes was not as sophisticated as it is today. There were many times that we took boards off windows we had covered in response to hurricane threats which never materialized.  Yet, when they did, we were always ready.  A lesson that, years later, we needed to learn as family caregivers.  

Like with a hurricane, it pays to be prepared.  If you are not a caregiver now, you never know when you will get that phone call in the middle of the night informing you of a loved one’s illness....continued

Tips For Mealtime From Our Website A caregiver from Ohio suggested the following: Use a large dishtowel or hand towels as "clothing protectors" (bibs) to save spotting them with food stains. One lady made beautiful patchwork quilted ones she called "food aprons" for several of the ladies at her table in the Assisted Living Residence where they lived. Family and friends and staff thought this was such a touching display of caring... As every lady at the table had one, there was NO embarrassment and soon others were asking for the food aprons too, even the men....She made one that looked like a plaid sport shirt with a bow tie and the man proudly wore it at each meal. Diane from Fredonia, NY had this tip: Hi Everyone! These tips are wonderful! Thanks to all who have contributed. My husband is in his third year of living with ALS and is now struggling to lift a glass or bottle to his mouth. Bendy straws have been a fantastic help to him. He just leans forward to drink. We also learned recently that restaurants will gladly cut up his meat for him in the kitchen before they serve it so I don't have to do it for him (and embarrass him) at the table. My husband suffers from Parkinson disease and is having more and more trouble getting food into his mouth due to his shaking.  He is not to the point where he will allow me to feed him so I was wondering is there any special silverware for Parkinson's people?
