Hugs Are Good Medicine, Too
Many caregivers who have attended the Fearless
Caregiver Conferences have asked me for a copy of
the following story with which I usually open my
speeches. The story is attributed to George
Carlin, but he always denied having written it.
Nonetheless, it really speaks to me as a caregiver
and, hopefully, to you as well:
The Paradox of Our Time
The paradox of our time in history is that we have
taller buildings, but shorter tempers; wider
freeways, but narrower viewpoints. We spend more,
but have less; we buy more, but enjoy less. We have
bigger houses and smaller families; more
conveniences, but less time. We have more degrees,
but less sense; more knowledge, but less judgment;
more experts, yet more problems; more medicine, but
less wellness...continued

To Trial or Not to Trial: That Is the
Question
|
|
By Hilary Wright
In order to clarify any confusion, clinical trials are often
referred to in a number of other terms by the members of the
medical-scientific
community, such
as clinical
study, research
protocol, or
medical
research, all
meaning the same
thing ...
clinical trial.
The National
Cancer Institute
(NCI) defines a
cancer clinical
trial as "an
organized study
conducted in
people with
cancer to answer
specific
questions about
a new treatment
or a new way of
using an old
treatment." ...continued

Fighting For Your Legs |
|
By Dr. Gary M. Ansel
Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD), a condition
synonymous with the clogging of arteries in the body’s
lower extremities, is often referred to as a “silent
killer” that can bring with it potentially grave results
that include gangrene, amputation, or death.
Data
shows that PAD currently affects approximately eight
million men and women over the age of 40 in the United
States. What’s more, the risk of developing PAD
increases dramatically as people grow older, with as
many as one in 20 Americans over the age of 50 developing the disease. ...continued

Travel Guidelines for
People with Memory Disorders
By Geri Richards Hall, PhD, ARNP, CNS, FAAN Many people enjoy
travel as a form of recreation, relaxation, and an
opportunity to learn. While travel may be a positive
experience for most people, it poses special problems
for people with dementing illnesses, for example,
Alzheimer's disease, multi-infarct dementia, Parkinson's
disease, Pick's disease, or injury that results in
disabling intellectual impairment...continued

Hello, I have a question for you. I am looking for some
financial assistance. The following is my situation.
I am 41 years old, and live with my parents. In November 2009 I
had to quit my full-time job to stay home and provide healthcare to my
mother, who has severe rheumatoid arthritis and other health problems. I
have no income whatsoever coming in. My parents get Social Security, but
they also have a mortgage (and will not do the "reverse mortgage"
thing), and they are paying my car payment and my COBRA insurance, not
to mention their bills. I also have mobility problems but do not
qualify for disability. I was wondering if you have any ideas on
what I could do to get some sort of money coming in. Medicaid?
Medicare? There has got to be something or someone who can help me, I
just don't know where to look. Any info, contacts, suggestions, or ideas
you have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much for taking the
time to read this. M
