The phone call came on a misty Sunday morning. Mary’s mother had
fallen at home and was hospitalized with severe injuries. Mary and
her sister were contacted by their elderly father and a social worker
and encouraged to return home to help their aged parents make medical
decisions, straighten out financial and legal matters, and find home
care services. They were called to be caregivers yet found themselves
facing this role with great apprehension and mixed emotions as they
considered stepping back into their parents’ lives. Memories of a
difficult childhood and stressful relationships had led the family to

What better “medicine” than a “treatment” that has only positive side
effects and “therapy” that is actually enjoyable? That is the “miracle
of music” when applied with intention. Music is shown to have the
ability to help organize the brain; especially vital to those who are
afflicted with Alzheimer’s.
Usually after twenty minutes of
music, there are observable effects, such as singing, foot tapping, and
clapping. Studies have shown that the results of a musical therapy

Improving Doctor/Caregiver Relationships

Tips for Doctors from Caregivers
Allow yourself to feel for
the caregiver and be in support of their role.
Be as up front as
possible with any health conditions or diagnoses of loved ones.
Do not be afraid to ask how the caregiver is doing, and think of their
needs even when tending to a loved one.
Be thorough and open with
any medications you may prescribe, and alert the caregiver to any
concerns or side effects that may result
Always be comfortable
enough to tell the caregiver about any resources or health care options
available, outside of prescribing medication and diagnosing the illness...
