Long Distance Caregiver - Challenges
and Solutions |
By Helen Hunter, ACSW, CMSW

Families who struggle to care for a
parent across the miles have a
unique disadvantage. They cannot be
there to know what is really
happening. It is often difficult and
frustrating to reach doctors or
social service agencies and to be
able to coordinate the needed care.....Continued

Looking Into Assisted
Living
Long Distance
|
By: J Lang Wood

It was sometime late in 2003
that I realized something had to be done with Mom. She had reached
the end of her ability to manage her affairs independently, and the
reports I got from family and friends in Illinois began to fill me
with alarm. And as I lived far away in Florida and knew that Mom had
no desire at all to move from the Chicago area where she had lived
all her life, I knew I had to manage to somehow find her a suitable
situation long-distance. .

Tips to Prevent Senior Scams |
By:
Alen Riggs

There is a ring at the front door
and you answer. A kind-hearted
gentleman informs you that he has
just fixed your neighbor’s roof and
he has a lot of material left over.
He tells you that your roof is in
bad shape and there is a bad storm
brewing. He says that your house
could get damaged and cost you
thousands if you don’t act now.
In fact, he will give you a special
rate if you pay up front in cash. ...Continued

How do I find a caregiver
to help me with my husband
who has had a stroke? I have
one now who is excellent in
keeping my husband happy and
clean but after 7 months I
find my husband has not
improved at all in using his
left arm and leg. I was so
busy paying bills, making
appts, figuring out
insurance, cleaning,
cooking, driving to therapy
appts. I left the therapy to
the caregiver. After the
neurologist last Friday said
we had passed the six month
window of opportunity for my
husband to regain the use of
his left arm, I realize the
caregiver had not been doing
any of the therapies that
had been taught us.
He is paid $130 for a 24/7
day, plus all meals, a
separate room with
kitchenette and his own
bathroom with shower and
toilet. I feel this
comes to around $190 a day.
I pay at the present time
$3900 to the caregiver out
of pocket. Am I unreasonable
in my expectations?
The one agency I worked with
the first month charged me
$6000 a month. I could not
keep this up. How do
I find a person who is
honest,and capable of
helping my husband? We
live in the Los Angeles
area.
Thank you so much.
