One of my favorite things I like to do in
this life has little to do with me at all.
It is when I am able to facilitate conversation,
advice and support between my favorite
caregiving experts – family caregivers.
This fall, as I travel the country to host
Fearless Caregiver Conferences in rural,
urban and suburban communities, I know that I am
traveling to discover the wisdom that is within
each and every family caregiver I will encounter
along the way. Every conversation I have with
family caregivers is guaranteed to add one extra
piece to the caregiving puzzle that I hope to
share with you and in the pages of
Today's
Caregiver magazine. I say all of this
because I am awed by the overwhelming support
you have offered to the caregiver highlighted in
last week’s newsletter. The
following is a representative selection of the
answers you sent.

I think this proves without the
shadow of a doubt that the only inappropriate
question from a caregiver is the unasked one.
SO, now your goal is to reach out to the next
family caregiver you meet (in the pharmacy line,
the doctors waiting room, support groups, hair
salon) and ask them the question “What helps you
get through the day?”
Email me your responses
before next Tuesday and I will include them in
next week’s newsletter. I think you will be
happily surprised at what you will learn from
your fellow experts.
Happy Labor Day
weekend to all.
Take care

Alzheimer's: Stepping Into The Leadership Role |
By Daniel Kuhn, LCSW, MSW
|
|
Since the person with AD no longer
possesses the mental skills to be
completely independent, a special
brand of leadership is called for.
At least one person must assume
overall authority for ensuring the
well-being of the person with AD but
it is best to include others too if
at all possible....Continued

When a Loved One Needs a Skilled Nursing Facility
|
By Trish Hughes Kreis

My brother recently needed to stay in a
skilled nursing facility (SNF) for two months.
My brother. Not my mother. Not my father.
Not my Great Aunt Josie (not that I actually
have a Great Aunt Josie). My

I work in a hospital where I
teach families how to be
caregivers. I am also a
caregiver for my husband who
has dementia. I have heard
our staff Psychiatrist say
that there is nothing
we can do to manage behavior
problems of demented older
adults; that the best we can
do is load them with drugs
that knock them out.
It
really feels like a
pessimistic and dismissive
attitude to me. I am so
afraid that my husband will
be treated by someone with
that attitude: throw
medicines at him just to
control a disturbing
behavior rather than try to
ensure a quality of life for
him during a very difficult
illness.
What can I do to
make sure my husband
continues to have a life
that means something to him
but without being zonked
out?
